4 Lessons Learned from the First abilIT Cohort

In summer 2025, Relay Resources welcomed the first cohort of our new abilIT program. Developed in partnership with Melwood—one of the country’s top advocates for and employers of people with disabilities and their caregivers—abilIT is a 14-week training program designed for neurodivergent people and injured veterans who are interested in building a future in information technology (IT).

The abilIT program helps participants prepare for industry-recognized certifications and strengthens the professional skills needed to succeed in tech roles. From June to September, participants in the first cohort gathered in downtown Portland for the free intensive training program, graduating on October 9.

abilIT is now accepting applications for cohort number two, which starts on January 5; the deadline to apply is December 27. There will also be an informational Virtual Preview Day on December 16 for anyone interested in learning more about the program.

With the first cohort wrapped up, we talked to abilIT Program Manager Raquel Salazar—who manages the program with Director of Disability Inclusion Megan Almrayatee—about the lessons they learned, as well as what people should know about and expect from the abilIT program.

1. abilIT Is a Full-Time Commitment

abilIT is a 14-week program of full days; participants should expect to treat it like a full-time commitment to successfully complete the training and get the most out of the experience. Instructors deliver the abilIT program through a mix of in-person sessions and self-study. The program includes two main components: an Information Technology (IT) unit and a Professional Development Training.

abilIT gives participants the foundational skills they need to confidently pursue entry-level roles in IT and cybersecurity. A key part of the program is preparing students to work toward industry-recognized certifications that are often required for these positions, such as A+, Network+, and Security+. We partner with the online learning platform Cybrary and provide access to learning modules and test vouchers for participants to get certified in IT.

Alongside technical training, participants also learn how to navigate real-world hiring processes, including how to complete job applications and how to practice for job interview environments.

2. The Program Is What You Make It

“This program is what you pour into it,” says Raquel. She describes that during the program’s 14 intensive weeks, abilIT participants immerse themselves in a fast-paced training environment that asks them to take real ownership of their career goals. The program is challenging by design, and the first cohort rose to the occasion—building both technical and professional skills while gaining confidence and courage along the way.

abilIT also fosters community. Participants encourage and support each other to finish the program. During the first cohort, our team saw personalities flourish and people become excited about the futures ahead of them. “For many of our participants, this was the first time they felt welcomed and not ashamed of their disability,” added Raquel. “It was truly amazing to witness the difference of our participants from week one to week 14.”

3. Be Prepared to Challenge Yourself

To get the most out of abilIT, participants need to be fully engaged in both the IT and Professional Development Training units, which work together to create a strong foundation. Successful participants are those who stay open-minded, are willing to make mistakes, and feel ready to step outside their comfort zones as they learn in new ways.

Our program policies are designed to mirror real workplace expectations, helping neurodivergent and disabled participants build the confidence and practical skills they’ll use on the job. This structure not only supports learning—it prepares participants to thrive in their future careers.

4. It’s Never Too Early or Too Late to Build a Career in IT

Many participants join abilIT with little or no job experience, and this program is both their introduction to a professional work environment and their first look into a future career in technology. Whether this is your first time entering the workforce or you’re looking to change careers, it’s never too late or too early to build a future in IT.

Join us for our Virtual Preview Day on December 16 at 4:30 p.m. During this online session, the abilIT team will give you a brief overview of the 14-week curriculum. You will also get to experience sample lessons from our IT and Professional Development Training instructors. This virtual event aims to give people an inside look at the abilIT program, as well as provide space for any questions you may have before you apply to become a participant.

Ready to Apply?

Only a few spots remain for abilIT’s second cohort. Classes start January 5, 2026. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and interviews will be scheduled before the new year. We offer three cohorts each year, so applicants may also be considered for the spring cohort starting in May.
